Soil stands out as the second factor that has to be considered. What stands out as highly interesting is that there is no need of rich or fertile soil to gain really great tasting wine. A soil that is deficient in nutrients shall give you small grapes which are ideal for producing good quality wine. If you want to prevent root rott then you need to drain the soil. If you are faced wtih soil that lacks nutrients there is the possibility to use compost.

While planning plantation layout you should always keep a plant away from another at a distance of 6 feet minimum with 8 feet of distance between rows. Every single vine should offer around one gallon of wine. When planning how many vines to plant keeping in mind the wine output, always plant a few extra vines to cater for loss due to insects, diseases etc. Vine growing can be a real comittment for any farmer.

All grapevines are capable of growing and covering a lot of space. However, for a better output it is advisable to put supports like trellis to assist the growth of wines upwards. You may also dig large holes in the soil for better drainage of the soil as any excess water in the soil may spoil the roots.

In the first planting year you need to pick strong vine and secure it without using wires but strings. Tender vines can be harmed at times by wires. The shoots that are strong should be left intact while the balance ones need to be chopped off. Choose to prune your vines in winters when the plant is still dormant. Repeat the same process the next year too of selecting the strongest vine and cutting the rest.

Pruning every year for two to three years will immediately give the plant a really strong structure to properly grow on. Do vine growing right and you should get good grapes too!
